A 70 meters long metaphor and an actual prop, the rope indicates closeness, loops and distance. Sara Šoukal developed this format by inviting guests to join her on the road of discovery. The improvisers swing from inspiration to action, tie spot-on knots and hold on to their discoveries. One decision can affect your whole life. In this workshop, we will explore the narrative and storytelling possibilities related to exploring different developments or versions of the same story. Depending on what choice the main character makes (for example, whether they succumb to temptation or resist it) the story will unfold completely differently. We will also analyse the inner struggle of the hero who stands at a crossroad, is torn apart and does not know what choice to make. The mind says one thing, the heart says another. Using tools such as internal dialogue, conversation, dreams, visions, or the fight between good and evil, we will go through the decision-making process of the hero. The ‘want’ is sometimes a lie we tell ourselves, the ‘need’ is the real truth about us. Over the years, such improv luminaries as Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Amy Poehler and Steve Carell have all used their training to hilarious effect in mockumentary films and TV shows. In this class, we'll explore how to put them on stage. We'll look at everything from the Christopher Guest cannon, through the US version of The Office and Parks & Recreation, to existing improv formats like The Documentary developed by Billy Merritt. We will put a lot of emphasis on the fixed points and the different ways of simulating forces. Although they have the same measurement, lifting a tube with maps as an architect is not the same thing weight wise, as a worker mobilising a steel bar in a metallurgy. Raising water from a well is not the same thing as being a firefighter and having to pull with a rope a couple of tourists that got trapped at the bottom of a cave. Our budget for scenery in improvisation theatre is infinite, and we just have to know how to manage it.
